At the request of Reverend Hugh Lynch, first Pastor of Mary's Nativity
Church, Flushing, Saint Mary's School was placed under the leadership
of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Brentwood, Long Island.
The first classes
arrived on September 14, 1936, with Sister Mary Thecla Hughs as
principal, a faculty of five sisters, and a registration of 294
students, grades one through four. On October 12, 1936, His Excellency
Thomas E. Malloy, S.T.D., dedicated the school, imparting the Lord's
blessings on the future work that would be accomplished in education
here for God's honor and glory.
Four
years later, the first graduates received their academic diplomas
and the enviable reputation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph for scholarship
began to bear fruit. As the school flourished and the enrollment
increased, it became necessary to add four additional classrooms
which opened in 1950.
The fifties
welcomed the laity as full-time members of the faculty, paving the
way for the many dedicated men and women who have joined with the
Sisters of Saint Joseph in educating the students in our parish
school. The spiritual benefits, the priestly concern, the unity
of the faith-filled Catholic faculty, the quality of instruction,
the extra-curricular activities, and a clean, wholesome environment
are but a few of the advatages of our school.
The administration,
faculty and staff have always been committed to excellence in education.
Our alumni embrace all walks of life. All the successes of the "little
acorn" can only be know to Almighty God, but our present and former
students are signs of the love, devotion and untiring dedication
that have been prevalent for the past 50 years.
We thank God
for the "oak" that has grown in Flushing and praising Him, take
pride in the education offered in Mary's Nativity School since 1936.
